放假开始玩Civilization 4，不过可惜的是这个游戏实在是太耗费时间了，而且还必须是连续的时间（为什么我干的事情大多数都是这样？）。如果存个盘过一段时间再看，就不知道当时自己是怎么想的了，玩个游戏还需要拿着纸笔作记录？

不过Civilization中的各个科技的引言都是很有意思的，摘录一些解释在下面吧。注意，只是摘录，全文可以看一下这里。

“Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back.” – The Buddha

这就是那句著名的解释 Meditation 的用处的话，不过我还是不知道 Meditation 究竟是不是从佛教中来的。

“I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” – The Bible, Exodus

这古英语读起来真费力气……
不过需要注意，出埃及记是旧约，更多的算犹太教？

“A multitude of rulers is not a good thing. Let there be one ruler, one king.” – Herodotus

这句和现代观念完全相反的，代表着 Monarchy 的开始。

“To bring about the rule of righteousness in the land, so that the strong should not harm the weak.” – Hammurabi’s Code; Prologue

一直以为 Hammurabi’s Code 是维护 Heredity Rule 的，但是实际上却是”seeks to protect the weak and the poor, including women, children, and slaves, against injustice at the hands of the rich and powerful”。在上面那句话的同时代出现这种东西真是奇怪。不过不知道上次讲课的时候说的某位 Nobel Economy Prize 最开始做的题目是不是就是从这里出来的。

不过最奇怪的是为什么 Code of Laws 会创立儒教？儒家不是和法家对立的么？或者说，本质上没什么区别？

“I will to my lord be true and faithful, and love all which he loves and shun all which he shuns.” – Anglo Saxon Oath of Fealty

这个解释了为什么骑士制度的根本，在于价值观的改变而不仅仅是 Heredity Rule。

“Two cities have been formed by two loves: the earthly by the love of self; the heavenly by the love of God.” – St. Augustine

最开始的一部双城记里面的，不是 Dickens 的那部。神权的开始。

“People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public.” – Adam Smith

这个需要解释一下，否则没有见过古典经济学的人完全不可能明白。古典经济学假设人都是自私的，所以人们之间作经济活动能不见面就不见面，以免多余的成本，都通过市场来完成。所以当如果有人集会，那么这些人的目的一定是操纵价格，控制市场。

“The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy” – Unknown

其实有的时候 Bureaucracy 还是挺有用的，不过我不明白为什么 Bureaucracy/Civil Services 对水利工程那么有用。

另外，这就是贵组现在面临的事情！将事情规章化，记录下来，然后进行发展，之后发现规章无法满足现实的要求，增加规章，之后发现人手不够，增加人手，然后更多规章……

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.” – Sun-Tzu

这就是那句”是故胜兵先胜而后求战, 败兵先战而后求胜”。

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” – Benjamin Franklin

这句话用在现在正合适。但据说最开始的时候不是这样写的，具体的历史可以参见这里。而且目前在这句话的出处上还有一定的争议，但是并不影响所表达的内容。

“The great masses of the people… will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one.” – Adolf Hitler

所以以后撒谎一定要说大的？这个就是从哪本《我的奋斗》当中出来的，简直就是充分运用传播的典范。可以参见这里。这句话也很有名了就不介绍了。

“When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist.” – Dom Helder Camara

不过基本上，所有人都不愿意问为什么有人会受苦，只会抱怨受苦或抱怨为什么不去救受苦的人。从这个角度来说，communism 的确很倒霉，而现在的福利机构也一点用没有。

“Put your shoulder to the wheel.” – Aesop

出自”Hercules and the Waggoner”，原来的意思是说一个人向 Hercules 祈祷说帮着来干活，Hercules说你自己用点力气就干好了。所以这句话的意思就是说要勤奋努力。

“The wisest men follow their own direction.” – Euripides

这句话的意思和上面一样。

“You can’t direct the wind, but you can adjust your sails.” – Unknown

也和上面差不多。

“A god from the machine” – Menander

原文为”Deus ex machina”。请注意，这句话的意思不是机器当中有神灵！这个翻译的人肯定什么都没查过，这是一句成语。当初在 Menader 的戏剧中安排的是一个很复杂的事件，然后这件事情的解决是用 machine 放下来一个 god。所以 god from machine 指的是哪些下来解决复杂事情的人……

太好笑了，蒸汽机的出现居然是用这个……

“The future will be better tomorrow.” – Dan Quayle

到现在为止，我还不知道 Dan Quayle 为什么而著名呢。Civilization 4中得分最低的就叫做 Dan Quayle，而且好像他也是历史上以讲演烂而著称的副总统。但是我还是不知道究竟烂到什么程度，还有这句话究竟是因为说得烂而被当作名言还是说的太好……

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, but the one most responsive to change.” – Charles Darwin

这句话正确的翻译应该是“物竞天择，是适者生存，而不是强者生存”。当初严复译这个的时候有很大问题，他明明译的是 Social Darwinism 的东西，后人却以为是进化论的原文，然后把“物竞天择，适者生存”当作 Darwin 的意思。而实际上 Darwin 说的是所有的物种中不是最强大的活下来，而是最适应环境的活下来，把这个比较去掉了之后现在中国的普遍观点就把上面的观点和弱肉强食等价起来，并认为这个是 Social Darwinism……实际上 Social Darwinism 都要比这种想法正常得多，这种弱肉强食的观点实在是除了战乱时代当间谍的借口之外在其他的地方都不管用。
