Middletown

Middletown is a small town in New Jersey. It is one hour’s train from New York. But in order to reach there from Princeton, you have to spend one hour to New York. Anyway if you have a car, you can get there from Princeton around 1 hour. The weather was very good weather when I reached Middletown. And the photo is very crisp.

The train station is a silent place. I hardly saw anyone around it.

The AT&T (should I write at&t?) Research’s place is called College Park, which is a common name in US. They do not know many strings from names. It is e a quiet place. The research center is the building behind the tree (check carefully), and the rest are all grasslands.

It was Halloween time. So the witches went out and crashed on the tree.

It is still quiet when I walk back to the train station.  I saw no one on my way back, in total 30 minutes. I should spend more time there, but I need to return to Princeton before 4pm for the last session of the workshop. Anyway I failed to do that because I jumped out at the wrong station. I should get off at Secaucus but I actually get off at Newark. The next day I went back to Boston by bus, and it was the real Halloween day. And it is the first time I feel I was living on transportations.

Princeton

I have been in Princeton twice, totally 6 days. But I had little experience with Princeton. Most of the time was spent on traffic and workshop.  Princeton is a nice place, with delicate building and forest. And I still know nothing about the architectures. I wanted to have a dinner inside the graduate college. It is said to be a large hall. But it was closed during I was there due to fall vacation.

BenCh accommodated me at Hibben Apartment, which is inside a forest. It is the view if you look out of the window.

There are also a few “modern” architectures in Princeton, like the building of CS and this art museum.

And this sculpture is more “normal” than above ones, near the main building.

There are also a lot of squirrels inside the campus. It seems that the American likes squirrels.

And a funny chair in the campus. Note that the feather is a real one.

And this golf field is the last scene I saw in Princeton. I talked with BenCh around it, and finally took the train to NYC, leaving a lot of regrets like no chance for IAS. (Besides, a comment, do not go Princeton for postdoc, go IAS instread, they have better salary, housing, etc.)

It is one of a few places you should try if you have a chance to be around NYC or Philly.

Philadelphia

Although I stayed in Philly for five days, I nearly see nothing inside it for I was spending most of the time for conference. The bus took me about 8 hours to Philly, which is a tired trip. There are a lot of tall buildings in the city.

And this glass building is the most wired one.

I forgot where I actually took the photo. It could be the city hall or the hotel. Anyway I don’t think it is a thriving city, because when I was walking in the city I can only see few people among the buildings. It is like a dead city.

The city hall marked that Philly was occupied by West India Company.

And this is what the city hall actually looks like…

The city hall station in the night.

And a very interesting parking sign around city hall.

Out of the downtown, you can see no high buildings.

The most famous sights of Philly are liberty hall and liberty bell. But I don’t think they are interesting. They are just not-so-old hall and a broken bell.

And the first bank of America, they really should build the bank in Wall Street. Who will believe in a bank like this?

I also spent one evening wandering around the city. I saw this sand sculpture in a garden. It has been built for a month and still standing there even in a rain! I have to emphasize that my umbrella was broken in Philly due to heavy wind and rain…

This is a colorful scene around sillybear (the one who accommodates me)’s house, a monastery.

And this one is more colorful in the night… I don’t understand why a hospital is so colorful, even for children.

The flying pig (-_-) in a small shop.

It is a small passage around the place I (or sillybear) was living. It reminds me of the shouts on the day Phillies got the champion.

Everyone should know this, the ENIAC, very first computer. This is just a part of it. I think the rest are too large to fit into the building today.

Finally, the last scene I saw in Philly — 30th street Penn station.

Gloucester

Gloucester is the very first place I visited as “traveling” in US. It was the CSAIL Student Workshop. Generally speaking, it is a “lobster” workshop, because everyone went to the workshop is heading for the lobster dinner.

Gloucester is the very first place for immigrants, too. It is the first a few ports in US. The rocky seashore makes a perfect port.

And the seagulls like the rocks, too.

And we can even see some lovely bees.

And the poor crab caught by us.

The buddies are: theorist, Yang Cai, and boost.

And “ITA Software” supported the workshop, you can send a resume.

fuck united
